White Buffalo Calf Woman (Lakota: Pte Ska Win / Pteskawin / Ptesanwi) is a sacred woman of supernatural origin, central to the Lakota (Sioux) faith as the primary cultural prophet. Stories handed down by word of mouth relate that this sacred woman brought the “Seven Sacred Rituals” to the Teton Sioux.
Initially, in Lakota folklore, Wópe shows up as a goddess of peace. She is the daughter of Wi and the Moon, Hahépi-Wi. In the stories, South Wind had a wife, and this wife was Wópe. When she visited the Earth, she gave the Lakota Indians a pipe as a symbol of peace. Later on, in the folklore, Wópe became PtesanWi (in the Lakota Language) which translated into English is White Buffalo Calf Woman.
White Buffalo Calf Woan instructed the Lakotas seven sacred rituals and gave them the chanunpa or sacred pipe which is the holiest of all worship symbols. After instructing individuals on the sacred rituals and giving them her gifts, PtesanWi left them promising to return.
When Roman Catholic missionaries initially came among the Lakota, their stories of the Virgin Mary and Jesus ended up being related to the legend of White Buffalo Calf Woman. The practice of syncretism fused Mary with PtesanWi and Jesus with the chanunpa (sacred pipe). This association continues among Lakota Christians to this day.
White Buffalo Calf Woman brings a promise of peace and healing. When you call upon her to assist you, she is always willing to help you find the way to peace in any situation. She may show you the way to forgiveness and/or resolution in a conflict or she may bring peace to the heart of all those involved.
Sometimes White Buffalo Calf Woman will guide you to create or participate in a ritual or sacred rite. I have known her to recommend the use of essential oils or incense or other sacred symbols in prayer or ritual to bring about the result you desire more quickly and consciously.
I always see her with a very deep color of blue around her. When I ask her to help with healing I see that blue color come in to surround the person or situation being asked about. When White Buffalo Calf Woman comes in to assist, you will know it by the warmth and sense of peace and tranquility that descends upon and surrounds your personal space and your heart.
