Most people are familiar with the legend of Merlin, the Magician or the Wizard from all of the King Arthur stories – from history as well as from modern times. We usually see Merlin depicted as an old man with a long white beard and clothed in blue or purple robes and wizard hat. Sometimes he has a magic staff or wand.
In these stories, King Arthur is guarded and protected and guided and taught by Merlin, usually from when he was a young child. Many times in these stories, Merlin’s use of magic must be hidden and done in secret, as magical powers were often seen as demonic or unholy.
No one knows for sure if King Arthur or the Merlin from these legends even actually existed. There are some stories that relate the Merlin to a position in family or village or pagan religious sect, rather than as a specific person. In these cases, the Merlin is seen as the storyteller, the bard… the guardian of all the history and ritual of the group of people he is associated with. In this case, the Merlin is a position of leadership and is filled by a different succession of people throughout time. Because of the importance of this role, and the ritual associated with the keeper of the stories, the Merlin is seen as a magical being, and may even actually possess esoteric magical knowledge.
In any case, spiritually speaking, Merlin is a magical being, as indeed, are we. He can be called upon to help out with any situation where magical results are needed or desired. He will remind you of your own magical nature and through the power of alchemy, he can help you completely transform any situation. He will also help you remember what a powerful creator you are, and will help you to create amazing things in your life, in a conscious and responsible way.
When Merlin is present, you may see or feel a royal blue light. I often see golden sparks dancing in this light. To call upon him, all you need do is ask. Merlin’s guidance usually feels magical to the one receiving it, and while it is often heard as words, it may even come in the form of symbols or a trail of signs and signals to follow. Just remember to always expect the unexpected and to be ready to remember your true magical nature whenever you ask Merlin for guidance.
